The stench hit me as soon as I opened the dorsal cargo bay door. From the smell, I’d guessed that the creature we’d killed had a friend, and it had found its way here. I pulled the first thing out of my tool bag, a screwdriver. Good, that would do some damage. The first creature had only died when Razko had thrust his knife into its skull.

I commanded all the lights to come on and the door to shut. I kept my back to the now closed door, knowing that if another one of those creatures had somehow got in here, it wasn’t about to run riot through a ship I’d worked so hard to repair. Nor was I going to let it get anywhere near Razko after he’d thrown himself in front of one to keep it away from me.

I side walked alongside the cargo bay’s walls. I winced as I stepped on something noisy.

An empty Meal Ready to Eat packet.

There was a pile of them in a corner.

Razko hadn’t been eating the extra ones. He didn’t leave the empty box. I’d been angry at him for nothing.

I wanted to kick myself. Had I asked him if he’d been eating the extra ones, we would have realized that something else was on the ship.

Something intelligent enough to find them and eat them without being noticed by us.

A something that I now saw, standing in front of the cargo bay door I’d just ordered shut.

The Kwobus wasn’t as wide as Razko, but he looked even taller. His long, thin limbs crossed the space between us. I tried to stab him with the screwdriver, but he pulled it away from me like an adult with a child.

I tried to kick and punch him, but it only irritated him and earned me the back of his hand across my face.

He said something to me in a language I didn’t understand. I understood its intent tho, as the hairs on the back of my neck rose instinctively.

He pulled something from a holster - a knife - before stroking it along the side of my face. I froze, the icy blade trailing a line of fire across my cheek.

I felt the slow trail as the blood ran down my cheek. He held the knife to my throat and walked me backwards until I was wedged between him and the wall. With two fingers on his other hand, he swiped at my cheek, using the blood to write something onto the metal wall behind me.

But he grew frustrated and muttered to himself again. I watched as his eyes lit up with an idea. He stabbed my stomach and smiled in triumph as my tunic darkened. He jabbed his fingers into the hole and ignored my weakening attempts to fight him as he continued his writing.

Stars haloed my vision and then everything went black.
